NetEase (www.163.com) Selects New Executives to Enhance its Outstanding Management Team

NetEase (www.163.com), the leading Chinese Internet portal, announced today the addition of two new executives to their growing management team. These appointments are the latest development in NetEase's strategy to enhance its leadership position in China's growing Internet industry by continuing to build their management group. Joining the NetEase core management team is Chief Operating Officer Susan Chen and, Co-Chief Technology Officer Jack Xu.
"NetEase is focused on the China market and to provide it with leading edge technology and high-level services, and we feel it is essential to build an international organization using the best practices from all over the world," says NetEase CEO King Lai. "Our strategy is to add to our existing talent base with individuals that know the local market, and have relevant global experience." These recent appointments to the NetEase management team reflect the Internet portal's execution of this plan.
NetEase Chief Operating Officer Susan Chen is joining the company from FarEasTone, a joint venture between US AT&T and Taiwan's Far Eastern Group and one of Taiwan's top wireless operator and Internet providers. Chen worked as VP of Marketing on the FarEasTone start-up team, which brought many innovative developments to Taiwan's communications industry including the introduction of the dual-band GSM system, the launch of FETnet and the world's first Chinese WAP portal, and the island's first mobile banking service. Chen helped FarEasTone establish one of Taiwan's best marketing team comprised of eight divisions, including Postpaid Communication, Prepaid Communication & ISP, Loyalty & Research, New Product Development, FET Portal, Hardware Marketing & Fulfillment, Public Relations and Marketing Planning.

Chen's sales and marketing experience also includes six years at American Express where she launched the American Express credit card, American Express Consumer Banking, Amex Insurance Agent Company and Amex Membership Rewards in Taiwan. Prior to that, she worked for eight years at Johnson & Johnson Taiwan where she acquired expertise in consumer packaged goods.
Jack Xu, NetEase Co-Chief Technology Officer, is one of the most accomplished scientists and industry experts in the field of search and retrieval technology. Working with NetEase founder and Co-CTO William Ding, Xu will continue to drive the company's technological advancement to new high. "One of the keys to future success for NetEase is technology. We are committed to continually developing new and innovative product and service offerings for our users, using the latest technology," said Xu. "I share NetEase's vision, and I look forward to working with William to build a world-class technology team."
Xu recently joined the NetEase team and brings his experience as the Senior Manager and Senior Scientist for the Core Technology Group at the well-known international search engine Excite@Home. In Xu's 4 years at Excite@Home in Silicon Valley, he helped grow the company from 80 to 2,800 employees and become a leading Internet search engine and the #1 broadband service provider in the world. Xu was responsible for the overall research and development work for Excite's search technology. Previously, he was the Senior Researcher at the University of California Berkeley, where he developed the cutting-edge multi-lingual search technology.
Xu will also play a key role in NetEase's Silicon Valley offices, which reflects the company's commitment to maintaining their leading position in China. "The best Internet technology and service is in the U.S. To stay on top and lead the China market we must keep our finger on the pulse of the Internet industry. Our Silicon Valley office will enable us to meet that challenge," predicts CEO King Lai.
Chen and Xu will complement the outstanding team that has lead NetEase to the Number 1 position in China including NetEase Founder and Chief Technology Officer William Ding, Chief Financial Officer Helen He, and Senior Vice-President Business Development Oliver Kwan.
